1. Inspection of sulphur recovery and tail gas cleaning units

Survey of operating sulphur recovery process has final objective to increase the unit environmental safety. During survey we analyze actual operation of individual process parts and of the unit itself. We optimize unit operating mode jointly with operations departments.  The practice has shown it allows reducing emissions of sulfur dioxide from 3 ? 5 to 30% and above depending on the unit configuration, type of used equipment and applied analytical control. The survey is performed jointly with the maintenance personnel of the unit, so the personnel gains experience for independent performance of similar works in future..  

To perform survey we use the most sophisticated equipment – portable chromatograph. We have necessary methods for chemical analysis of gas along entire unit path. They allow analyzing all sulphur-containing components in the gas, and determining level of hydrogen sulfide conversion in each stage and in the unit as a whole. Data processing is carried out using specialized software products of foreign origin and our proprietary designs.

A package of proposals is prepared based on the survey results, and it includes current and strategic measures for operation optimization and modernization of production. Package of current proposals comprises recommendations on temperature schedule of the unit; if needed, catalyst replacement is substantiated, operation modes of some equipment types are specified. Block of potential actions depends on the customer needs and includes options from partial reconstruction of some vessels or systems to recommendations on installation of extra stages for acid gas processing or different systems for tail gas additional purification. Our customers are often interested in increasing the existing unit capacity with minimum investment expenditures; we solve these issues also. Actually, the block of potential actions is a detailed technical assignment for project of unit upgrading, which can be made by our or third organization.

In summary, standard survey of sulphur recovery unit comprises the following stages:

  1. Instrumental analysis of sulphur-containing components in the process gas along the unit path.
  2. Calculation of hydrogen sulfide conversion into sulphur and objective assessment of operation of separate process parts and unit as a whole.
  3. Optimization of unit operating conditions, and development of recommendations of emissions reduction.
  4. Training of unit personnel in operating duty optimization techniques.
  5. Compilation of package of proposals in respect of current and strategic actions for operation optimization and production upgrading.

Field stage of works lasts 10 -  15 days, general duration of works usually does not exceed 3 months. In our opinion, open discussion and protection of working results with participation of all concerned services and specialists of the customer is an important factor at the final stage.

2. Inspection of amine desulphurization units.

Operating desulfurization units are inspected in order to optimize operation of some equipment items and the unit as a whole, and reduce operating expenses. It is important to monitor power consumption at the unit, detect and eliminate the causes of its unreasonable excessive consumption. Unsatisfactory unit operation often is caused by amine solution foaming and its resultant losses. Usually, solution contamination with products of its destruction, equipment corrosion products, and ingress of liquid hydrocarbons into system is responsible for that. Foaming of amine solution forces the operations staff to reduce the unit capacity.

Identification and elimination and bottlenecks in equipment operation, optimization the unit operating mode ensure maximum efficiency and perceptible economic effect of the unit operation.
